Vanderbilt has assembled an unusual concentration of computational research, clinical AI, music, design, public scholarship and cultural partnerships. The next institutional task is to give those assets recurring ways to form projects, share production environments and preserve what each collaboration learns.
Research question: Which institutional operating systems could Vanderbilt build during the next three years by connecting assets that already exist?

The College of Connected Computing, VALIANT, Amplify, the Wond’ry, the CCA acquisition, Blair, VI4-AiR, VUMC, the Curb Center, McGee, Frist, NMAAM and the Innovation Neighborhood already supply the ingredients. Each proposal below adds a missing coordination mechanism rather than another independent institution.

02 · Shared architecture
Interdisciplinary work becomes repeatable when an institution can identify a problem, compose a mixed team, provide a shared production environment, require an inspectable output and carry the resulting methods into the next project. The proposals differ in scale, though each installs part of the same cycle.

Vanderbilt already has visible music-and-AI activity, yet the current bridges end with courses, symposia and conversation events. A joint fund would make co-production recurring and would judge the collaboration through the artifact it produces.
VALIANT provides twelve labs and an institutional mandate for AI translation. Blair contributes the Music Cognition Lab, a Music Technology Minor and demonstrated faculty interest through its Music & AI symposium. Connected Computing, the Department of Art, McGee and the Heard Libraries Digital Lab extend the technical, visual and narrative range.
No standing program requires an AI researcher and a cultural producer to propose together, work through the same production process and deliver an artifact that can count in both fields. The present institution produces contact without a durable project-formation rule.
Fund three twelve-month teams at $25,000 each. Every application must include a VALIANT or Connected Computing investigator, an arts or humanities investigator and a producer, curator or technical lead responsible for completion. Each team must release a performance, installation, dataset or piece of software within the award period.
An interactive music system, a public Nashville music dataset, a narrative AI tool or documentary work, joint technical and artistic publications and a public presentation at Blair or Frist.
The fund could dissolve into discussion or treat art as a demonstration surface for technical research. Artifact milestones, shared principal-investigator status and evaluation criteria written across both fields would keep production mutual.
VI4-AiR has already shown that Vanderbilt can pair artists and scientists through a bounded summer production cycle. Extending that governance model into AI research is the fastest path to a credible program with a Vanderbilt lineage.
VI4-AiR has paired 119 artists with 71 scientists across more than one hundred collaborations and has documented the model through peer-reviewed evaluation. VALIANT, Amplify, the Curb Center, the University Museum of Art and the CCC AI Showcase provide hosts, public scholars and exhibition settings.
AI labs have no equivalent route for sustained artistic inquiry inside their research process. Occasional showcases reveal interest, though they begin after research choices have already been made.
Select three artists for ten-week summer residencies in VALIANT labs. Pay each artist a $10,000 stipend, pair each with a VALIANT researcher and a Curb public scholar and reserve exhibition dates at Cohen Memorial Hall and the CCC AI Showcase before the residencies begin.
Public installations, open creative tools, shared research documentation and an evaluation dataset that can support Mellon, NEH or NEA applications.
A residency can become outreach that leaves the host lab unchanged. The program should document research decisions influenced by the resident, methods transferred in both directions and evidence of continued work after the exhibition.
The CCA acquisition gives Vanderbilt a design and arts presence inside the Bay Area’s technology ecosystem. A named fellowship would make the Nashville–San Francisco relationship operational before the new campus settles into separate routines.
The CCA campus and Wattis Institute bring design, architecture, fine arts and exhibition capacity. Nashville contributes VALIANT, Amplify, DSI, the Wond’ry, Blair and VUMC. Together they create a combination of clinical research, music, AI and design that no single campus presently contains.
No documented program makes a Nashville researcher and a San Francisco designer jointly responsible for one project. Without that mechanism, the two campuses can remain administratively connected while operating as separate intellectual environments.
Begin with five virtual pairs during 2026–27, each receiving a small production budget and monthly critique. When the San Francisco campus opens, admit ten fellows who spend one semester in a Nashville host unit and one semester at the CCA Institute.
Joint prototypes, Wattis exhibitions, open-source design tools, shared courses and public programs that connect Nashville’s cultural institutions with Bay Area partners.
Opening delays or a narrow legacy-preservation mandate could postpone the connection. A program director appointed before campus launch can begin the virtual cohort and hold a budget specifically for cross-campus work.
Vanderbilt has strong cultural partners and substantial AI infrastructure, though those relationships rarely produce public computational works together. A co-commissioning lab would make Nashville’s collections, histories and communities part of the research environment.
Frist has hosted an AI arts track, NMAAM has a $2 million Vanderbilt partnership, VTNA is applying AI to 62,000 hours of footage and the Curb Center, EADJ, Heard Libraries, DSI and VALIANT already span public scholarship, archives and computation.
Partnerships remain event-based or collection-specific. No unit regularly commissions a museum, archive or community partner together with an AI research team and carries the result through production, interpretation and public release.
Co-commission one interactive exhibit with Frist and one African American music archive project with NMAAM. Locate the coordinating team in Heard Libraries or Curb, with joint technical leadership from DSI or Connected Computing.

Cultural partners could be treated as venues or data suppliers. Co-commission agreements should grant partners authority over research questions, interpretation, community access and the conditions under which collections enter AI workflows.
Vanderbilt’s AI governance capacity is distributed across clinical systems, HCI, law, education and humanities. A coordinated center would give those groups a shared research agenda and a route from institutional practice to public policy tools.
STIR Lab studies socio-technical interaction, VUMC ADVANCE operates clinical AI governance, VAILL works on AI law, Peabody develops human-centered educational technology and the Robert Penn Warren Center, McGee and Vanderbilt Kennedy Center contribute humanistic, narrative and disability perspectives.
The groups have no common appointment structure, funding program or policy-translation process. Their work can remain adjacent even when the same system raises questions of clinical safety, consent, access, explanation and institutional accountability.
Convene a four-school working group in Fall 2026, publish a joint research agenda, begin a public case seminar and prepare the next NEH Humanities Research Centers on Artificial Intelligence application. Design the first joint appointment that spans an AI unit and an arts, humanities or public-policy unit.
Joint empirical research, governance templates, policy briefs, public workshops, clinical case tools and a competitive federal center proposal.
The center could become a seminar that comments on technical work after deployment. Its charter should include access to live institutional cases, shared methods, funded joint research and authority to develop operational governance artifacts.
Every recurring program in this packet will eventually need a place where computation, fabrication, performance and exhibition can occur within one production cycle. The Innovation Neighborhood planning period is the moment when that space can still be reserved.
The forty-acre Innovation Neighborhood, the Wond’ry’s makerspaces, ACCRE, VALIANT, Blair performance facilities and the University Museum of Art collectively supply most capabilities. They remain distributed across spaces governed for different primary users.
No neutral production environment belongs to the collaboration itself. Teams must move between labs, studios and venues while negotiating access through the priorities of each host unit.
Designate a temporary cross-school space inside the Wond’ry or Engineering during 2027. Use the pilot to measure demand, equipment use and project flow. Reserve 15,000–20,000 square feet in the Innovation Neighborhood for a permanent GPU-enabled studio, fabrication lab, recording environment and public demonstration space.
A shared creative-compute environment, a fabrication-to-performance pipeline, recurring public demonstrations and a permanent home for the fund, residencies and public lab.
One school could capture the space or capital planning could close before governance is settled. The Provost should reserve the program area first and assign it to a cross-school council whose budget is independent of any single occupant.
Students can already assemble pieces of this education across Connected Computing, Peabody, Blair, the Wond’ry, Art and Curb. A certificate would turn personal navigation across those units into a recognized pathway with advising, production requirements and a cohort.
The MS-AI and generative AI curriculum, Peabody IDeaTE, Blair’s Music Technology Minor, the Wond’ry’s Innovation and Design Strategy curriculum, Art’s creative coding courses and Curb’s Public Scholars Program already cover most of the academic terrain.
No credential recognizes work across these units, no advisor is responsible for the complete pathway and no practicum requires students to bring technical, design and cultural methods into one public project.
Create a fifteen-credit certificate housed administratively in Connected Computing and governed by a cross-school committee. Require Studio in AI, Human-Centered Design for AI, a new AI and Cultural Production course and a Public AI Practicum, with electives from Blair, Art, Law, McGee and the Wond’ry.
A recognizable talent pathway, stronger recruitment for the bi-coastal fellowship, public portfolio work and graduates who can move between research labs, cultural institutions and product teams.
The certificate could become a list of electives without a shared intellectual experience. Cohort advising, a required practicum and participation in one of the packet’s production systems should define the credential.
